Welcome to Year 6 – Hillary Class

Hello and welcome to Hillary class.

I am Mrs Webster and the Teaching Assistants are Miss Summers, Mrs Goodwin and Miss Michelin.

In Spring 1, our History topic is The Victorian Era. We will be learning about the reign of Queen Victoria, changes in society, railways and other inventions. In Science, our topic is Electricity building on previous learning in Year 4: we are making circuits, troubleshooting and using universal symbols to draw circuit diagrams. In Design & Technology, we are making Automata Toys linked to Victorians, using our designing, measuring, sawing and gluing skills.  During this half term in Art, we will be learning about William Morris  and will focus on developing and improving our drawing and painting skills using inks. In RE, we will be learning about how faith is expressed in Islam. This term in music, we will learn about the work of Kodaly and his music method, creating rhythmic patterns collaboratively and playing clapping games. This will then lead into composing our own songs and recording using notation. This term in French, we will learn how to describe French houses using adjectives and prepositions. Computing this term is all about Data: we will learn about transferring data, data usage and data analysis; we will then design a smart school and present our ideas. In PE, we will be improving our ball and team skills through basketball. We will also be learning all about how to use our bodies to create shapes both individually and in groups.

In Spring 2, our Geography topic is The Alps. In this Unit, we will locate the Alps on the map and label the eight countries they spread through. We will also locate the human and physical features of this area and compare our local area with a specific location in the Alps. Science this half term is all about Light. We will be building upon the Electricity work from last half term, focusing on how light travels, how we see, reflection, refraction and shadows. DT also builds upon the Electricity work last term, as we will be designing, creating and evaluating our own Electrical buzzer game. In RE, we will be answering the question “What does it mean for Christians to know that God is holy and loving?”. In Music, we will be learning all about dynamics, pitch and texture and focus on the role of the conductor. We will be learning about the history of computers in our Computing lessons, which will support our World War 2 work next term. In PE, we will be practising our gymnastic skills and sports education which is an ongoing House competition, focussing on team sports. Every student in the class will have a leadership role and each student is responsible for making sure their team work well together.

Facts about Year 6 – Hillary

Sir Edmund Hillary was a well-known explorer and mountain climber. He was the first person to climb Mount Everest along with Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay. He was born on July 20, 1919 in Auckland, New Zealand. He completed his first major climb in 1939 when he reached the peak of Mount Ollivier. After he finished school, he took up beekeeping as a profession. This job allowed him to continue his mountain climbing. Edmund Hillary founded the Himalayan Trust in 1964 to build schools and hospitals for the Sherpa people in Nepal. He then became New Zealand High Commissioner to India in 1984. In 2008, Lukla Airport in Nepal was named Tenzing-Hillary Airport. Edmund Hillary was made an honorary citizen of Nepal on the 50th anniversary of his ascension of Mount Everest. He was the first living person to appear on New Zealand’s currency.
