Year 1 – Bumblebees - Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 – Bumblebees Class

Hello and welcome to Bumblebees Class.

I am Mrs Belsham  and our Learning Support Assistant is Miss Gordon.

In Autumn 1 we begin with a Geography-based topic called ‘Living Here!’ where we learn about our local area. We will develop our mapping skills by locating familiar features on aerial photographs and creating simple maps. In Science, we will be exploring how seasonal changes affect trees, weather patterns and daylight hours. We will name the four seasons in order and describe the typical weather in each. We will be designing and creating a moving picture/storybook in DT and in PE, we will be learning to move in different ways with increasing control. In Computing, we will have our E-Safety lesson and we will learn how to login and navigate a computer including developing mouse skills. We will be finding out about Christianity and what Christians believe God is like in RE and looking closer at important celebrations like Harvest, Bandhi Chor Diwas, and Diwali will be celebrated. In Music, we will explore keeping the pulse together through music and movement and in PHSE, we will learn to recognise and name a range of emotions, as well as learn to identify facial and body clues linked to feelings. In Art, we will explore how lines can create shape and pattern and use this to design and create our own initial ‘tangle ‘ artwork using different shapes, lines, patterns and colours.

In Autumn 2, we will go back in time to find out about Victorian toys. We will learn about these toys from the past, create a timeline of how toys have changed over time and we will compare Victorian toys with toys from today and identify any similarities and differences. In Music, through fairy tales, children will be introduced to the concept of timbre; learning that different sounds can represent characters and key moments in a story. We will be finding out what Christmas is and why it is a very important time for Christians in RE and learning about data and the different ways that it can be represented in ICT. In Science, we will be exploring everyday materials and discovering the difference between objects and materials by exploring and classifying a variety of items. In PHSE, we will be connecting with others and identifying what makes us and others special. We will learn how friends, family and classmates can help and support each other. We will design and create a puppet using a range of joining techniques, for example, stapling and sticking fabric together in DT and in PE, we will learn and practise a variety of skills, including travelling movements, rolls, jumps and balances. Lastly, in Art, we will be printing using a variety of media.
