Nursery
Our nursery is for 3 and 4 year olds. Children who turn four between the 1st September and 31st August are able to join nursery in the September .Younger children are able join Caterpillars Nursery class the term after their third birthday from January and after Easter, whichever is appropriate. The children have access to their own sensory room and outdoor playgrounds with climbing equipment, ride on bikes, scooters and a sand pit. We work closely with parents to keep them informed of their children’s progress and we regularly share photographs of the children engaged in activities in nursery using the “Class Dojo” app. Children are introduced to early phonics and early number skills alongside all the other areas of the Foundation Stage Curriculum.
Reception
Our Reception classrooms are located in their own building, which offers modern facilities, a large playground and access to covered outdoor play spaces. Reception consists of two classes: Cygnets and Chicks. We continue to work closely with parents to keep them informed of their children’s progress and we regularly share photographs of the children engaged in activities in school using the “Class Dojo” app. Children are taught phonics and number concepts on a daily basis, alongside all the other areas of the Foundation stage Curriculum. Parents are able to access the “Numbots” app to support their children’s mathematical development along with the “Bug Club” app, which supports reading comprehension.
Year 1
Year 1 consists of two classes: Bumblebees and Rabbits. Year 1 is an exciting year for children as they begin their journey through the National Curriculum. There is a very smooth transition from Reception to Year 1 including lots of opportunities for play, free choice and outdoor activities. Both Year 1 classes have access to an outdoor classroom area, which is used on a regular basis. Phonics is a key focus throughout the year and built on from Reception. Phonics is taught every day in order to help the children to develop fluency with their reading and to prepare them for the Statutory Phonic Screening check in the summer term. We use the Twinkl Phonics Scheme, which is a validated scheme, closely aligned to the Letters and Sounds Scheme.
Year 2
Year 2 consists of two classes: Owls and Hedgehogs. In Year 2 we continue to build on the children’s phonic knowledge from Year 1 whilst introducing more in-depth Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) concepts for children to apply in their writing. Children’s reading also focuses on developing their comprehension and inference skills. We use “Accelerated Reader” to support the children’s comprehension skills and encourage parents to read with their children on a daily basis. In Maths, we use a mix of concrete and pictorial resources to develop children’s fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills. Children have access to the “Times-Tables Rock Star” app to support with their multiplication skills. We support children to complete their end of KS1 SATs assessments in the Summer Term in a familiar and supportive environment.

Year 3
Year 3 consists of three classes: Coleman, Byrd and MacArthur. Year 3 is the beginning of Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum and to mark this change, our children move across to our North Pole Site. Not only do the children have access to a number of specialist rooms, including the Science lab, the cookery room, the art room and the IT Suite, they also have their own dedicated area, ensuring that they continue to feel nurtured whilst in a larger environment. The children have many visits to the North Pole Site to ensure a smooth transition. The children will need to bring either vegetables or a piece of fruit for break- times, as they will no longer be entitled to access the free fruit and vegetable government scheme. Once the children are in Year 3 they are no longer entitled to the Universal Free School Meals; this means that you need to apply for free school meals if you are in receipt of benefits or pay online through the Relish app if you are not eligible.
Year 4
Year 4 consists of two classes: Grylls and Fossey. The children continue to have access to all of the specialist rooms at the North Pole Site. They are taken swimming once a week, usually in the Autumn Term, to develop their water confidence and swimming ability. By the end of their swimming experience, we assess the children to establish if they are able to swim 25 metres, use a range of different strokes and know how to keep themselves safe in and around water. In Year 4 the children also go camping for one night where they participate in a range of activities aimed at developing confidence and team work skills. In June, the children take part in the statutory “Multiplication Times Tables Check” to determine whether they can recall their times tables fluently; this is essential for future success in maths.
Year 5
Year 5 is the beginning of Upper Key Stage 2 and the children make the exciting move upstairs in the North Pole Site. Year 5 consists of three classes: Amundsen, Peake and Fiennes. From Year 5 onwards, the children are able to bring in their own pencil cases. (Please see the uniform section of our website for a list of stationery). The uniform changes very slightly in Year 5, as the children will need to wear a collared shirt and a school tie, along with a v- neck jumper or cardigan. We encourage all children to wear their uniform with pride. Children are allowed to walk to and from school independently from Year 5 onwards; however, we need parents to email the office account: office@scottprimary.co.uk to provide written permission for this. We also allow any child walking to and from school independently, to bring a mobile phone with them for the journey. All mobile phones must be turned off before entering the school playground and they will be kept securely during the school day. A Mobile Phone Agreement needs to be signed by both the children and the parents before being allowed to bring phones into school. This agreement clearly outlines the expectations surrounding their safe use.
Year 6
Year 6 is our children’s final year of their primary education with us. Year 6 consists of two classes: Hillary and Fields. Our oldest children are given many roles of responsibility including Library Ambassadors, Play Leaders, Arts Ambassadors and Reading Ambassadors to name but a few. We work closely with our local secondary schools to ensure a smooth transition for our children. In May our children take part in the statutory End of Key Stage 2 SATs for reading, maths and spelling, punctuation and grammar; writing is assessed using teacher judgement. We hold a parents’ information evening to inform you of how together, we can support the children with their SATs. After SATs, our children go on a residential visit for two nights. At the end of the year, we celebrate our children’s learning journey with an Awards Evening. Our children also perform an end of year production for the younger children, staff and parents.
