Arts

Intent

At Scott Primary School, we value the importance of Art and Design and feel all children should have access to an art and design curriculum which fosters a lifelong love and appreciation of this subject. Art and design gives children the opportunity to share and express their individual creativity, independence, self-reflection, interest, thoughts and ideas.

It is our intent to provide all children with the skills, techniques and knowledge needed to independently create their own drawings, paintings, sculptures, and crafts. We want the children to have a natural sense of wonder and curiosity when studying a range of famous artists, architects and designers from different cultures and periods of historical significance.

Our curriculum focuses around the seven elements of Art and gives the children opportunities to use these elements of art and design confidently. Vocabulary for each element is woven through the lessons and modelled throughout by the teacher, developing the children’s ability to evaluate their own work and discuss the work of great artists or their peers; through guided discussions they learn how to assess and compare skills, techniques, and art forms, which then supports evaluations of their own work and skills progression.

We expect children to be able to look at an image or a piece of art or design and to understand it, not just react to it. We equip them with the skills required to have an understanding of the language of art and design. This enables them to describe what they see in detail and to provide evidence for their observations.

Children develop their skills across a range of wet and dry and two/three-dimensional work. They develop skills in the design process; sketching, painting, drawing and sculpture. This range of activities facilitates the application of the seven elements in different ways. Units are designed to allow children to draw on prior learning and to experiment with new skills and techniques, building their resilience and confidence.

Artist of the Half Term

Each half term an artist will be chosen and you will have the chance, at home, to try a mini art project based around this artist! Once you have completed your mini art project, we would love to see what you have created so these can either be a photo sent in to the office or the art piece shared with your class teacher.

Our artist of the half term is currently Keith Haring

Seven Elements of Art

Aspire to Be

At Scott Primary, we aim to inspire our children to reach for a range of jobs regardless of their culture, background or heritage. Therefore we use our aspire to be posters to give some information about the different jobs and professions that the children could want to do when they leave us. These posters are displayed around our school and the children have the opportunity to read them, learn from them and on most use a QR code to delve deeper into the person life.

Art Ambassadors

Our Art Ambassadors are chosen for showing an extra interest in all aspects of Art. They demonstrate a passion for the subject and are always keen to go the extra mile in art understanding the 7 elements of art and how to use and identify them in the Art of others

Their role in school to is to help raise the profile of Art. Meeting regularly to discuss key aspects of art that have been raised by the younger children. As well as growing their own skills and passion for art. The children are passionate about displaying the art of their peers.

Art Competitions

Seven children from Year 5 entered the Harpur Trust biannual competition – competing against children from schools across Bedfordshire.  Five artworks were chosen by the judges.  These artworks were professionally framed and displayed in the Higgins Art Gallery over the Summer holidays.  They were collected from the museum in September and are now on display in school (along with the two artworks that were not chosen).

Three children were placed in the KS2 competition:

  • Annabelle : 1st place
  • Maya : 3rd Place
  • Ezarah : Highly Commended

Annabelle and Maya received their prized from Mayor Dave Hodgeson at a prize-giving event at the Higgins in July 2022.  We had our own wall in the Gallery – which was exciting!

Mayor’s Christmas Card Competition, Autumn 2022:

In Autumn 2, ten of our Year 6 arts ambassadors gave up a week of their lunchtime breaks to create Christmas Card designs for the Mayor’s annual competition.  We discussed the concept of how ‘smiles’ support wellbeing and based our designs around the ‘Faces’.  Angharad from Year 5 was chosen as runner up and received a visit from the Mayor. Here are the art ambassadors with some of their finished designs:
