Autumn 1

This half term our topic is ‘The Great Fire of London’. Within our History lessons we will be linking our Year 1 learning of Significant Individuals and timelines to our current History Unit. We will build on our understanding of chronology and where the Great Fire of London occurred in British History. We will spend time comparing houses during the Tudor and Stuart period to Modern day houses as well as looking at the how the fire started, spread and was extinguished. In Science we will learn about the importance of fire safety, and investigate the three things that fire needs to burn. We will also identify objects and materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock and paper and compare them to materials that would have been used for building in 1666. In DT this half term we will be designing and baking our own bread and constructing Tudor houses. In Computing we will learn about word processing and how to stay safe online as well developing touch typing skills. We will also learn to use simple editing tools within a word processor including: bold, italics, underline and font colour as well as how to import images. In Music, we will learn how to play tuned and untuned instruments to create our own compositions for The Great Fire of London, taking inspiration from the song ‘London’s Burning’. In RE, we will be answering the question ‘What can we learn from sacred books and stories? ‘Our Art and Design unit is ‘Portraiture’, where we will be creating our own silhouette portraits and explore line, shape and colour to draw all of the things that represent us within in them. In PSHCE we will be focusing on ‘Being me in my world’ and ‘Hopes and Fears’. Within PE we will be covering Dance and Fun Fitness Circuits.

The children will conduct field work to investigate local weather conditions. In Science, the children will name a variety of plants and animals according to their different habitats. They will also sort, group and classify objects based on    living and non-living things. In our computing unit, the children will be learning about what algorithms are and how to ‘debug’ them. In Music, the children will be learning about animal call and response songs, using instruments to represent different animals, copying rhythms and creating their own call and response rhythms. They will also learn a variety of sings for our Christmas production. In Art and Design, the children will be creating their very own printed Arctic polar bear scene using ink, brayers and printing tiles. Mechanisms. In DT, the children will plan, design and make a moving Christmas cracker with levers and pivots. Our PE units this half term will be Gymnastics and Team games. Facts about Year 2 – Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs are nocturnal which means that they sleep in the day and only come out at night. The ‘Hedge’ part of their name comes from where they build their nests in hedges, bushes and shrubs. The ‘hog’ part comes from the small snorting/ grunting sound they make which is similar to a pig/warthog. Hedgehogs are actually lactose intolerant, so milk should never be left out for them, water is perfectly fine.
