Facts about Year 5 – Byrd

Richard E Byrd is an American polar explorer and writer of many books which follow his adventures.

Byrd first began flying when he joined the Navy in 1912 and continued until the end of WW1. In 1924, Byrd started his polar career which led to many achievements. He made many expeditions in his life, but one of the most famous expeditions happened in 1929 when Byrd and three companions made the first flight over the South Pole. They flew from Little America to the South Pole and back in 19 hours without any mishap. After many adventures, Byrd rejoined the army during WW2 and was placed in charge of the U.S. Navy’s Operation High Jump, which was to train personnel in cold climates and to establish bases which would cope with the cold temperatures.
