Welcome to Year 6 – Hillary Class
Hello and welcome to Hillary class.
I am Mrs Webster and the Learning Support Assistants are Mrs Cusano, Mrs Mattin, Mrs Franco and Miss Michelin.
In Autumn 1, our History topic is Crime and Punishment. We will be learning about how crime and punishment has developed through the ages: from the detailed legal system in Roman times, weregild in Anglo-saxons and Viking times, trials by ordeal in the middle ages, the Bloody Code in the Early modern period, the introduction of peelers in the Victorian period and the legal system we now know in the 20th and 21st century. This topic will also be complemented by an exciting trip to the Tower of London! In Science, we will be learning all about Evolution and Inheritance focusing on variation and adaptation, exploring different theories of evolution and examining scientific evidence from plants and animals demonstrating evolution over time. This half term in Art and Design, we will be learning about German Expressionism and Lino printing, creating our own self-portrait Lino prints in this style. In Design and Technology, we will be using a combination of textiles skills such as attaching fastenings, appliqué and decorative stitches to design, assemble and decorate a fit for purpose item. In RE, we will be learning about Justice and Poverty, answering the question “Does faith make a difference?” In French this half term, we will be focusing on French sports and the Olympics. In computing, we will be learning all about data handling and how to represent data digitally.
In Autumn 2, our Geography topic is Where does our energy come from? In this unit, we will find out where resources such as power and food come from and look at ways in which natural resources can be conserved. We will discuss renewable energy sources and the benefits of using them. After discussing the idea of a carbon footprint, we will have the chance to consider how our actions impact others around the world, and think about the changes that we could make to try to ensure that natural resources are shared so there is enough for everyone. In Science lessons, we will be learning about Classification of Living Things, describing how living things are classified into broad groups according to observable characteristics based on similarities and differences, including micro-organisms, plants and animals. In Computing, we will be using the programming language of Python to create computer generated art. In French, we will be learning all about French football champions and the associated vocabulary. This half term in RE, we will be focusing on the idea of being part of a community, answering the question ‘What will make our community a more respectful place?’
Facts about Year 6 – Hillary
Sir Edmund Hillary was a well-known explorer and mountain climber. He was the first person to climb Mount Everest along with Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay. He was born on July 20, 1919 in Auckland, New Zealand. He completed his first major climb in 1939 when he reached the peak of Mount Ollivier. After he finished school, he took up beekeeping as a profession. This job allowed him to continue his mountain climbing. Edmund Hillary founded the Himalayan Trust in 1964 to build schools and hospitals for the Sherpa people in Nepal. He then became New Zealand High Commissioner to India in 1984. In 2008, Lukla Airport in Nepal was named Tenzing-Hillary Airport. Edmund Hillary was made an honorary citizen of Nepal on the 50th anniversary of his ascension of Mount Everest.
