Welcome to Year 6 – Hillary Class
Hello and welcome to Hillary class.

In Science, our topic is Animals including Humans focusing on the Circulatory System. This builds upon previous learning in Year 4 where they learnt about the digestive system. In Design & Technology, we are designing a playground featuring a variety of different structures, giving consideration to how the structures will be used. During this half term in Art, we will be learning about the artist Henry Moore and developing our 3-D drawing skills using various inks. In RE, we will be learning about how faith is expressed in Christianity. This term in music, we will be learning Songs of WW2, learning songs such as ‘Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag’ and ‘We’ll meet again’. In French, we are learning about French holidays, learning about the countries of the world, using different tenses and writing more complex sentences. In Computing, we will be learning about the history of computers and how they have evolved over time.
In Summer 2, our Geography topic is Eastern Europe. The children will learn about the different countries of Europe and then look in more detail at some of the contrasting areas of Eastern Europe, finding out about the landscape, climate and locations in each area. Science this half term is all about working scientifically. We will be conducting a range of experiments to consolidate our Science learning throughout the year. Computing and Design & Technology will link together and will involve designing a multifunctional and compact product to meet a client’s brief using CAD systems. In RE, we will be answering the question “What would Jesus do?” In Music, we will be learning the songs for a leavers’ production and performing to an audience. We are very excited about going on our 2-night residential trip this term to Hilltop in Norfolk!
Facts about Year 6 – Hillary
Sir Edmund Hillary was a well-known explorer and mountain climber. He was the first person to climb Mount Everest along with Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay. He was born on July 20, 1919 in Auckland, New Zealand. He completed his first major climb in 1939 when he reached the peak of Mount Ollivier. After he finished school, he took up beekeeping as a profession. This job allowed him to continue his mountain climbing. Edmund Hillary founded the Himalayan Trust in 1964 to build schools and hospitals for the Sherpa people in Nepal. He then became New Zealand High Commissioner to India in 1984. In 2008, Lukla Airport in Nepal was named Tenzing-Hillary Airport. Edmund Hillary was made an honorary citizen of Nepal on the 50th anniversary of his ascension of Mount Everest.
