Welcome to Year 5 – Peake Class

Hello and welcome to Peake class.

We are Mrs Stott and Mrs Cowley and the Teaching Assistant are Ms Newman and Mrs Abraham.

In Spring 1, our History topic is the Tudors – we will be learning about some of the Tudor monarchs, the reformation and the attempted invasion of England by the Spanish Armada. Children will consolidate their understanding of historical sources, their use and how our understanding of history can change due to archaeology and interpretation of historical texts. In this term, the children will experience life in Tudor times through engaging activities during our Tudor day. In DT, we will be learning about how triangles can be used to strengthen structures and making our own truss bridges such as those built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Children will learn to sing an African song in Music, building on their understanding of the Xhosa culture. We will investigate the properties of materials in Science and visit the STEM centre in Stevenage to develop their understanding of Space.  Our focus in RE, will be to investigate and debate the creation of the world.  In Art, we will be exploring the colourful work of Wassily Kandinsky and creating landscape paintings for the Art Bytes UK art competition.

In Spring 2, our Geography topic is – Why do oceans matter? The children will explore the importance of oceans of an ecosystem, describe the impact of human actions, and consider the consequences for future generations.  Our Science topic will continue to investigate materials with a focus on irreversible changes. In DT this half term, we will be research healthier choices and create a healthy version of Spaghetti Bolognese. In Music, we will be learning about the origin and structure of the Blues. Our focus in R.E. will be inspirational people and how their religion supported their choices in life.  In Art, we will be experimenting with Op Art, exploring the work of British artist Bridget Riley; Dutch artist Maurits Escher; and indigenous painters, such as Doreen Reid Nakamarra and Tommy Watson.

Facts about Year 5 – Peake

Tim Peake was the first Briton to visit the International Space Station. He spent six years training for the mission to the ISS. He beat 8,000 other applicants who responded to an internet advert from the European Space Agency entitled, ‘Do you want to be an astronaut?’. Before becoming an astronaut, Tim Peake was a pilot in the British Army, flying helicopters. To train for his space mission, he had to live underwater for 12 days and learn Russian.
