EARLY YEARS/RECEPTION

Welcome to Chicks, Cygnets and Ducklings

At Scott Primary, we aim to provide the highest quality care and education for all our children thereby giving them a strong foundation for their future learning. We create a safe and happy environment with motivating and enjoyable learning experiences that enable children to become more confident and independent. We value the individual child and work closely with parents and carers and other professionals to make sure that we meet the needs of all the children in our classes.

As part of our practice, we deliver a varied, play-centred curriculum based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), across the 7 areas of learning.  We provide learning experiences developed from child-led ideas and plan challenging and stimulating learning experiences, based on the individual child, informed by observation and assessment.

We pride ourselves on the positive relationships that we form with the children in our classes and we inspire a love of learning and independence that will remain with the children throughout their school life!

Transition into School:

We strive to ensure that we promote smooth transitions between ourselves and nurseries / pre-schools. Class teachers visit the children before they start school in their current nursery or pre-school setting.

We hold a new parent’s information evening where information is given out about our school and what happens when the children start school with us. Parents are given the opportunity to see the Reception classrooms and ask the staff any questions that they may have.

At the end of June, each child is sent an invite to 2 story sessions at our school. During these sessions, the children can access some of the activities that will be available to them when they start school, they are also able to meet all Foundation staff and listen to a story which is read by their new class teacher.

During the first week of September, the Foundation Stage team carry out home visits. This is where information is gathered about each child from their parent / carer. The children are asked to wrap up their favourite book and bring it to school on their first day to share with their new friends.

We truly believe that all the above ensures that the children feel confident and secure about starting school.

Transition from EYFS to Year One:

Our children have a number of visits to their new classrooms in Year 1 and have story-times with their new teachers in the summer term

Reception children also begin to have their playtimes and lunchtimes up on the ‘big’ playground with the rest of the school so that they can build relationships with the rest of the school and begin to gain an awareness of routines and boundaries.

We pride ourselves on the positive relationships that we have with our parents. Parents are kept informed of their child’s learning via Curriculum Information Sheet, Curriculum meetings and consultation meetings.

We send out ‘Parent View’ questionnaires every term. This is where parents are given the opportunity to write down any areas that they feel their child needs extra support in, or areas where they feel their child is particularly able. Parents are also given the opportunity to suggest some ‘Next Steps’ for their child.

Every half term, we invite parents into school for our ‘Stay and Play’ sessions. This gives parents the opportunity to come into class for the afternoon and take part in different activities with their child.

At the end of every day, we write the daily / weekly activities on a whiteboard in our outdoor area. This informs parents of their children’s learning and gives staff the opportunity to remind parents of any forthcoming events.

We operate an ‘Open Door’ policy, where the parents can approach staff with any questions and concerns at any time. This enables us to form positive two-way interactions with all parents.
